ABOARD THE FISHING TRAWLER BULLDOG - At about noon yesterday, at least 20 fishing vessels began circling Vineyard Haven’s harbor, blasting their air horns and displaying banners to protest President Obama’s restrictions on commercial fishing that fishermen say threaten their livelihood. Two U.S. Coast Guard Zodiac boats intercepted the flotilla of protesters minutes out from the president’s vacation paradise, but were keeping their distance and have so far made no attempt to stop the fishermen either physically or by radio. “We’re hoping we let him know we’re in dire straits,” said Richard Canastra, co-owner of the Boston and New Bedford...

Fishermen aim Vineyard protest against Obama

Posted by admin / Under Fishing

Leaders of the recreational and commercial fishing industry are planning a boat protest against federal policies Thursday outside the harbor of Vineyard Haven on Martha’s Vineyard, where President Obama and his family are summer vacationing. The protest is being organized after a bipartisan, bicameral coalition of federal lawmakers -- including the core of the President’s Congressional base on banking and health care issues -- have given up hope of working productively with Obama’s top appointee for oceans and fisheries, Jane Lubchenco, who heads the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Boats from Gloucester and New Bedford, the hub ports of New...

"Two Tone", a mirror carp thought to be one of the UK's biggest freshwater fish, died earlier this month. A plaque has been laid at Conningbrook Lake where he lived and Two Tone will be stuffed and donated to the Natural History Museum. Lee Jackson, one of the few people who managed to catch him, said anglers would be lost without him. It is thought that Two Tone died of old age. The federal Environmental Protection Agency has received a petition to ban lead in hunting ammunition and fishing tackle, and Oregon wildlife officials are watching with some concern. Also worried are people in the shooting sports. “This is a serious issue for anyone who likes to target practice, shoot for fun or enjoy hunting, and will be a huge impact on shooting ranges across the nation,” said Mike McCarter, range master of the Albany Rifle and Pistol Club, which maintains a range at Saddle Butte east of Shedd. “We are energizing our membership to send letters to the EPA in opposition...

Officials kill grizzly bears to head-off lawsuits before they arise

Thursday 2nd of September 2010 01:02:22 PM
Posted by admin / Under Fishing

Wildlife officials have killed a grizzly bear in Wyoming and a grizzly bear in Montana to head-off potential lawsuits. The Montana grizzly killed and partially consumed Kevin Kammer at a Gallatin National Forest campground near Cooke City, Mont. on July 29. The Wyoming grizzly killed 70 year-old botanist Erwin Evert on June 17 on the Shoshone National Forest near the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The circumstances were quite different, but the decision to kill the bears was undoubtedly influenced by a 1996 court case over the terrible bear mauling of 16 year-old Anna Knochel at a U.S. Forest...

Blue catfish weighs in at 130 pounds A Missouri couple may have broken a 5-year-old world record by hauling in a 130-pound catfish Tuesday, beating the previous record set by a Godfrey fisherman by 6 pounds. Until fisherman Greg Bernal, 47, of Florissant, Mo., can get the blue catfish verified as the world's largest catch, he will have to be satisfied knowing his catfish is certified as breaking the Missouri record. Until Tuesday, that record was 103 pounds, said Dan Zarlenga, media specialist for the St. Louis Regional Office of the Missouri Department of Conservation. "It's pretty amazing, world record...

Wealth, Jobs, the Fishing Industry, and Obama

Thursday 2nd of September 2010 01:02:22 PM

The New England fishing industry is in serious trouble. Fishermen are leaving, giving up on their jobs. Fishing boats have become a glut on the market. The only aspect of the industry that is flourishing is the government bureaucracy. The free-market system no longer applies in the age of Obama. When free enterprise did apply, entry into fishing as your own boss required a boat -- a significant investment, considering the technology to make the boat safe, legal, and competitive. In economic terms, the boat owner made an investment of capital or, if you will, of wealth. The new captain...

Obama and the Shoes of the Presidential Fishermen

* JUNE 25, 2010 Obama and the Shoes of the Presidential Fishermen By MEGHAN CLYNE After 66 days, four Gulf Coast visits, one Oval Office address and countless slams at BP, President Obama still hasn't convinced Americans that he truly understands the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico—including its devastating effects on fishermen's way of life. Could the reason be that Obama is not a fisherman himself? Americans are, after all, accustomed to their commanders-in-chief also being anglers-in-chief—a tradition going back to our very first president. According to Bill Mares's fascinating book, "Fishing with the Presidents," George Washington not only...

Fishery Council Approves Red Snapper Ban

Thursday 2nd of September 2010 01:02:22 PM

ORLANDO, Fla -- Fishermen will be prohibited from catching red snapper and some other snapper and grouper species in the southeast Atlantic in a nearly 5,000-square-mile zone off the coasts of Georgia and Florida under a measure passed by a federal fisheries management council Wednesday. Members of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council voted 9-4 in favor of the ban which supporters hope eventually will restore the red snapper's population over the next three decades. Opponents, though, doubt studies showing that the population is overfished and said Florida fishermen already have been squeezed by restrictions in the Gulf of Mexico...

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- Federal officials just extended a ban on red snapper fishing off the east coast of Florida, but not everyone knows about the extension. The ban was originally set to expire June 2 after six months, but now it will be in place through December. A fishing-boat dock at Grimsby, U.K., at the turn of the 20th century. Over the last century or so, trawlers have gotten more powerful engines, fish-detecting radar, lighter nets, and vast onboard freezers. What the fleets might really need, though, is a time machine. After all, bottom-fishing fleets in United Kingdom waters today have to work 17 times harder to catch the same amount of fish as their sail-powered Victorian counterparts did, according to a new study. To address innovations have made fishing more efficient over the years, the study authors devised a new measure: units of "fishing power."After analyzing historic...

Officials urge calm, promote seafood [Gulf Oil Spill]

Obama cabinet members urged Coast residents Thursday to remain calm about the approaching oil spill and, along with state and local officials, allayed fears about the safety of eating seafood or visiting the Coast. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, speaking at Keesler Air Force Base, plugged Gulf seafood, saying it’s still safe to eat because fishing has been shut down in contaminated areas. Frustrated fishermen breathed easier after state Sen. David Baria, D-Bay St. Louis, assured them they will have a chance for subcontract cleanup work. Long Beach paid tribute to its fallen officers Thursday, the 12th anniversary of the...
